ETD Status Visualization Experiments

ETD Status Visualization Experiments

An index of experimental and unpolished visualization prototypes created as a tentative first step toward encouraging discussion at Virginia Tech of simple displays for library data.

VisualizationDescription
ETDs by type when initially submittedA bar graph showing the number of ETDs that were originally submitted with each availability type. Hover over a bar with the mouse pointer to see the actual value. Click on a bar to see more information about ETDs submitted with that status. When viewing tables, click on a column header in the table to sort. If an ETD is available in VTechWorks, the title will be hyperlinked to the ETD.
Current embargo status of initially withheld ETDsA pie graph to show the current status of ETDs that were originally submitted as embargoed. Hover over a slice to display more information. Click on a slice to see a sortable table of the ETDs.
New ETDs by submission periodA stacked line graph that shows the number of ETDs, Unrestricted and with other status, that have been submitted during each period that corresponds roughly with a semester of submissions. Hover over a data point to see a specific count. Each count is also linked to a sortable table with the relevant ETDs.
Mosaic plot: unrestricted ETDs by departmentWork in Progress. A demonstration of how one might see at a glance if students from each department are likely to submit an ETD without restrictions.

These visualizations relate to the status of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) provided to the libraries through the Graduate School at Virginia Tech. ETDs submitted with an "Unrestricted" status are made available to the public immediately; ETDs submitted with other statuses have restrictions such as an embargo period or limited distribution to only the Virginia Tech community.

Thank you to the staff at University of Cape Town library, Cape Peninsula Univeristy of Technology libraries, Cape Peninsula University of Technology Information Technology Services for providing ideas and inspiration, and to the people at the libraries at Virginia Tech for attention and interest.
